The earthquake in Haiti demonstrated how natural disasters can be magnified by poor construction practices. Today, engineers are developing materials and techniques to improve living conditions in Third World countries. Learn more from Bhavna Sharma, a doctoral candidate in engineering at the University of Pittsburgh who is promoting bamboo as a sustainable construction material, and members of UW-Madison’s Engineers Without Borders, who have been working in Haiti, Rwanda and El Salvador.
