While literature played a significant role in the liberation struggles of the 1950s and 1960s, cinema was a less efficacious tool for national cohesion. Now situated in a much changed cinematic landscape on the continent, Francophone African cinema boasts real successes in its engagement with the global as it seeks new ways to apprehend and represent the national.

This is a Focus on the Humanities event. Focus on the Humanities features the work of outstanding UW-Madison faculty.
