Description
Michael Reynolds, assistant professor in Near Eastern studies at Princeton University, draws on Russian and Ottoman sources to examine the politics of Muslims in the Russo-Ottoman borderlands of the Caucasus and Anatolia. His lecture will question the emphasis upon new forms of identity as the key to understanding the politics of the late empire and will instead attempt to highlight the critical roles that institutions inside and outside the state played in driving the politics of the era.
