Lauren McCarthy, doctoral candidate in political science, addresses how human trafficking is a problem that has vexed Russia since the fall of the Soviet Union with many men, women and children being trafficked into, out of and through the country for sexual and labor exploitation. Upon passage of new laws criminalizing human trafficking, Russia and the international community were hopeful that the laws would help law enforcement better deal with the problem.
