Lecture by Professor Jonathan Schneer. In November 1917, Great Britain issued the Balfour Declaration, promising to support the establishment of a homeland for Jews in Palestine. Most historians treat the lead-up to the declaration as a triumph, but in fact Chaim Weizmann's campaign to win the British governing elite over to Zionism nearly misfired. This lecture will show how British Prime Minister David Lloyd George nearly betrayed Weizmann and Zionism.
