Description
Director Rouben Mamoulian returned to filmmaking with this stylish, pre-code gangster yarn, taken from a story by Dashiell Hammett. Gary Cooper stars as a conflicted young sharpshooter, forced into a life of crime when his lady (Sylvia Sidney) lands in jail for murder. Cinematographer Lee Garmes was in the midst of his career-defining stretch with Josef von Sternberg (whose Underworld is an obvious touchstone), and his work here is of the same caliber.
