This talk by Darya Khitrova, a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Chicago, is a case study in the history of Russian lyric poetry and its social functioning. It focuses on Разуверение (Dissuasion, 1821), a famous love elegy by Evgeny Baratynsky, and on various ways in which this poem used to be used by its readers, from the poet’s contemporaries who would quote it in love conversations to 20th century writers who would refer to it in their novels.
