Description
Lauren Kroiz, assistant professor of art history. In 1925, artist Arthur Dove arranged a denim shirt, bamboo poles and oil paint into a composition shockingly titled with a racial epithet for African Americans. Kroiz examines the work, now known as Goin’ Fishin’, both within the series Dove termed “things” and in period discourses of cultural regionalism. She will focus self-reflexively on attempts to develop an approach that avoids reinscribing dominant binaries between high/low, margin/center.
