Description
Biominerals include mollusk shells and the skeletons of sea urchins, plankton, corals and mammals. Biominerals meet important functional requirements for organisms, including mechanical support, attack, defense, grinding, biting and chewing, gravitational and magnetic field sensing, light focusing and many others. Biominerals are typically much more resistant to fracture than their mineral components, a result of their intricate nanostructure.
