Description
Derek J. Penslar, University of Toronto. In mid-20th century Europe and the Middle East, Jews were internationally mobilized for battle, including the Spanish Civil War and in the Allied struggle against Hilter's Germany. What's more, a substantial portion of Israel's forces in the 1948 War consisted of new immigrants from Europe and volunteers from many lands. This talk bridges what is usually seen as a chasm between the Zionist struggle to establish the state of Israel and previous forms of Jewish military activity.
