Cathryn Carson, University of California-Berkeley, reflects on several decades of social scientists' troubled experience with nuclear power. She discusses the dilemmas confronting a social scientist who might imagine making a difference in the nuclear arena, with examples from waste management debates, the federal Blue Ribbon Commission on America's Nuclear Future and work with engineers in Berkeley and Tokyo.
