Description
The classical immunological paradigm is predicated on the body’s ability to recognize and eliminate non-self. But, the self/non-self model has yet to facilitate any resolution of the field’s major concerns. David Napier (City College, London) argues that replacing immunology’s persistent self with less static concepts derived from non-Western, especially South and Southeast Asian contexts, offers a model that allows immunology to reframe what may be an outmoded construct of the self.
