Description
With Christine A. Orme, LLNL. Recent research has shown that biologically inspired approaches to materials synthesis and self-assembly hold promise of unprecedented atomic level control of structures and interfaces. Bones, shells and teeth are beautiful examples of how natural systems build hard materials by controlling crystallization. Unlike most materials grown in the lab, nature takes advantage of a complex mixture of adsorbates to mediate crystal growth.
