					Description

Benedict Gross, Harvard University. David Mumford introduced geometric invariant theory to study the relation between the orbits of an algebraic group G on a linear representation V and the algebra of G-invariant polynomials on V. The geometric theory was developed over an algebraically closed ground field. We will consider the stable orbits in some simple representations over the rational numbers,
and relate them to the arithmetic of hyperelliptic curves.
