This talk discusses how nanostructure design provides a unique opportunity
to manipulate electrons, ions and photons to obtain remarkable device
performance. 1) broad-band light trapping is demonstrated by forming
whispering-gallery resonant modes inside spherical nanoshells. 2)
Li-ion battery anodes made of interconnected hollow spheres are designed to
accommodate large strain without pulverization. 3) nanoscale morphology
engineering for efficient polymer solar cells is discussed.
