Description
Early American music was isolated from the cultivated traditions of Europe, but it is precisely this isolation that gave it a fresh new sound. This lecture will explore the social context of early American vocal music, its spread from New England to the South, and the tensions between the homegrown and cultivated traditions that arose during the early 19th century.
