Visiting Artist Talk

Aaron Spangler's work absorbs old Germanic carving traditions, American woodcraft, hard country music, epic Cold War-era heavy metal, the black jagged lines of a jack pine forest, WPA murals and art deco extravagance. Working from the perspective of a character that is at once himself and the other, local and foreign, living alternately in the city and the woods, Spangler jumps fences so that he can pick up the most absurd, provocative parts without committing fully to a single vision.
