Description
The red knot has become imperiled by the harvest of horseshoe crabs, and an object of concern for environmentalists, biologists, and policymakers. A century ago, shorebirds like it also attracted scientific attention in the context of a different environmental crisis. Comparing episodes of endangerment, this paper draws attention to the changing structures of scientific bureaucracy helping determine the evolution of North American wildlife management over the 20th century.
