Description
The recent boom-bust episode in home prices was accompanied by an equally striking boom-bust pattern in the volume of mortgage-backed security issuances. This talk will describe the basic mechanics of securitization, propose an explanation for its meteoric rise until 2008, and discuss how this expansion helped fuel the housing boom. It will also discuss the causes and consequences of the collapse of private securitization activity since then.
