Cinematheque: The Films of Pierre Étaix

Étaix’s first feature is worthy of the silent-era greats he pays tribute to in his nearly wordless performance. Mimicking a suave ladykiller, a shy bachelor (Étaix) attempts to seduce women real and imagined in a series of elegant comic vignettes, before ultimately zeroing in on a bewitching chanteuse he can safely admire from afar. The film will be preceded by Rupture, a short comedy about a Dear John letter co-directed by Étaix and Jean-Claude Carrière.
