Since 2004, Rèpriz, the center for traditional music and dance on the French Caribbean island of Guadeloupe, has spearheaded a grassroots campaign to see gwoka inscribed on the UNESCO’s list of Representative Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanities.
Jerome Camal is assistant professor of anthropology and teaches in the newly created global music studies program. He holds a Ph.D in musicology from Washington University in St. Louis and a Master’s of Music from the University of New Orleans.
