This four-part series surveys the origins of monasticism; the Rule of St. Benedict and others; monastic space, enclosure, and the outside world; economics; the development of new orders; and the daily lives of medieval nuns and monks. We also examine the marvelous art and architecture of numerous monasteries, including Fountains, Clonmacnois, Jerpoint, Mont St. Michel, Cluny, Fontevraud, Silos, and Las Huelgas.
