Description
In the 1960s almost all of New York City's public hospitals came under administrative control of its prestigious academic medical centers (AMCs), while others were threatened with closure. To many critics, these affiliations with AMCs were a blatant power grab. They argued that the city was paying to aid the rise of private "medical empires." Merlin Chowkwanyun re-examines this critique and finds that it rests on romanticized notions of grassroots governance in the health care sector.
