The effects of groundwater pumping on the Central Sands surface waters were well predicted 60 years ago, and in the last decade or two have become remarkably evident. However, the science is still met with incredulity among some stakeholders, agency officials, elected representatives, and even university scientists. What direction Wisconsin should go with the management of groundwater and high-capacity wells is in debate, and the final outcome is anything but apparent.
