Description
Maurice Ravel (1875-1937) is widely known as a composer inspired by dancing bodies. His multi-movement piano solo, "Le Tombeau de Couperin", completed after his service in World War I, memorializes France’s dead through historic dances. Susan C. Cook, professor of music and associate dean for the arts and humanities in the Graduate School, explores this work within the culture of French postwar monuments and reveals how the dancing body negotiates French past and French future.
