Description
In many countries, judges are frequently transferred, which undermines court productivity. Using large-scale data from India’s lower courts, where over 40 million cases are pending, this study examines the effects of judge transfers that occur about every 10 months. Leveraging transfers caused by retirements at age 60, the analysis shows that transfers reduce productivity by creating vacancies. (with Saloni Bhogale and Amit Jadhav)
