Description
This talk explores how people creatively adapt to algorithm-mediated communication online. It presents two projects: one on how women on Xiaohongshu strategically repurpose hashtags to avoid unwanted audiences, and another on coded, multilingual language in online reviews used to express opinions while evading moderation. The work highlights how users negotiate meaning under algorithmic constraints and what this implies for designing AI systems that respect linguistic diversity and user agency.
