The Center for Humanistic Inquiry into AI and Uncertainty opens the semester with a provocation: delivering generative AI as a chatbot may be "the original sin" of this AI revolution. Tarleton Gillespie (Microsoft Research, Cornell University) traces the prompt-response format back through search engines and media theory and the corporations that profit from making it feel like talking to a person.
