Past ecosystem states can have persistent effects on the composition, structure, and function of ecosystems today. Examples from a variety of ecosystems will be presented that incorporate historical information from diverse sources. “Historical information” includes not only direct anthropogenic effects, but also any information from the past that is useful for understanding ecosystems today, and for predicting the diverse trajectories of ecosystems into an uncertain future.
