UW Space Place Guest Presentation
Piercing the Dusty Veil: Mapping the Structure of Spiral Galaxies
Event Details
Date
Tuesday, September 10, 2013
Time
7-8 p.m.
Location
2300 S. Park Street
Description
Our own Milky Way galaxy is known to have a remarkably subtle disk structure in which stars occur in multiple very thin layers. Andrew Schechtman-Rook from the UW-Madison Astronomy Department will explain how he uses advanced modeling techniques and high-resolution near-infrared imaging from UW's own WIYN telescope to study the detailed anatomy of other galaxies and compare them to our own. Mapping this structure is essential to understanding how spiral galaxies form and evolve.
