This presentation draws on the lived history of hundreds of thousands of terrorist attacks around the world to assess how news coverage of terrorist events in the New York Times has evolved to characterize the problem of terrorism in 5.9 million articles published between 1945 and 2005. Scott Althaus is currently the Merriam Professor of Political Science, Professor of Communication, and Director of the Cline Center for Advanced Social Research at the University of Illinois.
