The Straits of Mackinac link Lakes Michigan and Huron, forming the largest lake system in the world by surface area and the fourth largest by volume, and containing nearly 8% of the world's surface freshwater. The Straits of Mackinac serve as a waterway for commercial shipping and a nexus for recreation, tourism, fishing (tribal and recreational) and as a conduit for petroleum transport. The past, present and future policy, risks and science of the Straits of Mackinac will be discussed
