Fashion is anything but frivolous. This talk will explore the economic and social implications of footwear and how mass production, market fragmentation and the commodification of identities has made Western culture “shoe obsessed.”

The 2023 Harris Lecture is presented by Elizabeth Semmelhack, Director and Senior Curator of the Bata Shoe Museum in Toronto, Canada. With a collection of over 15,000 objects, the Bata Shoe Museum celebrates the style, development, and function of footwear.
