Description
Del McCoury met David Grisman at the first banjo show Del ever played with Bill Monroe in the spring of 1963 at New York University in Greenwich Village. It wasn’t until three years later that these two got up on stage together. Over the years they have performed at various venues and festivals and in 2012 they released “Del and Dawg – Hardcore Bluegrass,” a unique collection of bluegrass classics, made at two jam sessions in the 1990s. With it is a celebration of the nearly 50-year bluegrass friendship that these two legendary musicians have shared.
For nearly half a century, David Grisman has been a force in the evolving world of acoustic music, embracing many styles, genres and traditions. Along his career, Grisman met guitarist Tony Rice and formed the David Grisman Quintet, which also included violinist Darol Anger and bassist/mandolinist Todd Phillips. After recording for major and independent labels, he founded his own label, Acoustic Disc, in 1990, producing 67 critically acclaimed CDs, five of which received Grammy nominations.
Among the most distinguished practitioners of traditional bluegrass, Del McCoury was the man of the “high lonesome sound” for over three decades. In the 1990s he formed The Del McCoury Band which by the end of the decade had become the top winner at the International Bluegrass Music Association's annual awards, winning the International Bluegrass Music Association's Entertainer of the Year award nine times and nominated for three Grammy Awards, winning in 2005 for Best Bluegrass Album in “The Company We Keep” and in 2014 for “The Streets of Baltimore.”
