Class of 1925 Gallery, Memorial Union
WUD Art presents "Where Tradition Meets the Unexpected" in the Class of 1925 Gallery at Memorial Union! This student-curated exhibition will be running from Friday, February 16th through Friday, March 9th, 2018. Join us for the opening reception of "Where Tradition Meets the Unexpected" on Friday, Feb 16th from 6-8pm. This will be a dual opening with Kristy Deetz's exhibition, "Threads, Folds, Rabbit Holes," also located in Memorial Union in Porter Butts Gallery. Light refreshments will be served. "Where Tradition Meets the Unexpected" will display historic posters from numerous Wisconsin Union Theater productions. These posters provide a unique dual snapshot of both the stellar programming of the Wisconsin Union Theater and a look at prevalent graphic design during various points in the venue's history. It's a stunning time capsule of both performing and visual arts, one that highlights the significant cultural role that the Wisconsin Union has played on a campus, city and statewide level. In the seventy-eight plus years since that first production, the theater has continued to reflect a vibrant kaleidoscope of performing arts, films, lectures, public discussions and so much more. Marian Anderson, Ella Fitzgerald, Indian Prime Minister Nehru, Frank Lloyd Wright, Eleanor Roosevelt, Martin Luther King, Jr., Robert Frost, Itzhak Perlman, John F. Kennedy, Yo-Yo Ma, T.S. Eliot, Jesse Jackson, Arthur Rubinstein, Jascha Heifetz, Louis Armstrong, Martha Graham, Dave Brubeck and countless others have graced the theater stage. The facility has also been a learning laboratory for hundreds of student productions and events, affording generations of students the opportunity to develop production, leadership, and management skills as well as the chance to interact with world-famous artists and presenters. The Wisconsin Union recently wrapped up the last phase of historic renovations at Memorial Union. Treasures that were tucked away for safekeeping during this work are once again emerging, including archival Wisconsin Union Theater posters held in the Union's permanent art collection. Following this exhibition, many of these posters will be installed in locations throughout the Union Theater facilities. Prior to that reinstallation, the Wisconsin Union Directorate Art Committee wanted to celebrate their return through exhibition.
