During the 3rd millennium BC beadmakers of the Indus Civilization used agates & carnelian to produce ornaments of such beauty & quality that they were famed in distant regions & handed down for thousands of years. Modern beadmakers in India continue this tradition even today. However, other beadmaking traditions & agate sources can be found across the Old World & this presentation will discuss how archaeologists can study and differentiate similar looking beads made from different agate sources.
