Jennifer Utrata, University of Puget Sound, will talk about the ideology of independent self reliance (and a silence on the part of the state) that tends to obscure the contributions of grandmothers, and how babushki are fundamental to single mothers’ relative success . In other words, single mothers may want a good man at their side, but most instead need a babushka to make it in the New Russia.
