Description
Sternberg’s historical drama about Catherine the Great and her rise to power has been described by Leonard Maltin as a “visual orgy.” While far from historically accurate, the film shows off the director’s fascination with décor; costume designer Banton created some of his most lavish costumes for Marlene Dietrich. Sexually frank and audacious, the films was rejected by Depression-era audiences, but found a devoted following who appreciate its over-the top qualities. (35mm, 104min.)
