Description
By 1914, German emigrants the world over had created various hybrid identities and
host-minority relationships. Though their communities’ internal cohesion was
often limited, they were nevertheless seen as outposts of a “Greater German
Empire.” Stefan Manz (Aston University, Birmingham UK) examines how
geographically scattered and dissimilar diaspora Germans came to be seen as a
unified transnational “community of spirit,” affecting their sense of national
belonging and ethnic identity.
