Description
Since the 1940s, outside curiosity toward the Pennsylvania Dutch has made tourism in Amish areas quite lucrative. Popular depictions of the Amish capitalize on the marked “other-ness” of their way of life and their language. Dr. Joshua R. Brown (UW–Eau Claire) analyzes the ways various cultural artifacts (Broadway musicals and plays, romance novels, advertisements, language guides) shape how in- and out-groups perceive and create social, especially sociolinguistic, identities.
