The mythic "fall of the Roman Empire" still warps our historical thinking. Though its western segments were dismantled in the fifth century, its eastern territories, mainly Greek-speaking, continued for a millenium under unbroken imperial rule. In this class we survey its character and its legacies. Meets Wednesdays through May 8.
