Description
Kathryn M. Sanchez, professor of Spanish and Portuguese and 2011-12 Feminist Scholars winner, will discuss the performative space of the casino in Rio de Janeiro at the heart of Rio’s entertainment scene, set against the backdrop of racial and gender politics of the period. At a time when Brazil is experiencing a new cultural impetus to represent difference as it comes to terms politically and socially with its hybrid culture, the casino is emblematic of an enduring white and gender-bias space.
