Description
Jerome Camal, UCLA, presents "Gwoka from Revolution to Relation: Musical Paths to a Creole Post-Nationalism." In the 1970s, Guadeloupean separatists adopted and adapted gwoka, an African-derived music and dance tradition, to boost national consciousness. These musical developments illustrate what Camal calls a “creole post-nationalism” that responds to both local nationalist orthodoxies and to neocolonialist pressures.
