On March 31st, 1964, the Armed Forces of Brazil staged a coup d'état, installing a military-backed, authoritarian regime that would persist in power until 1985. 50 years later almost to the date, the Brazil Initiative along with co-sponsors have invited a group of Brazilianists for an anniversary symposium that seeks to commemorate this departure from democracy and critically analyze its consequences in a larger context and from diverse perspectives.
