From 2005 to 2011 a small group of MIT students won more than $3m from the Massachusetts Lottery, taking advantage of a quirk in the game’s rules.? Prof. Ellenberg will talk about what they did, whether it was fair, and what it all has to do with finite geometries and error-correcting codes.
