Wind and solar energy industries have grown rapidly but still supply a small fraction of global electricity. Their continued growth will require that they compete against energy-on-demand alternatives. Energy storage can help meet this objective but cost improvement is needed. Here we devise a method to compare storage technologies, and determine optimal cost improvement trajectories. These results demonstrate the benefits of predictive evaluation of energy technologies.
