Description
Archaeologist Phil Millhouse of Red Gates Archaeology will discuss the critical role of early 19th century Native lead mining, which provided a substantial income to Meskwaki and Ho-Chunk communities in southwestern Wisconsin. Mining activity was largely conducted by women and was incorporated into the larger seasonal round. The mines eventually drew thousands of prospectors and resulting tensions culminated in the Winnebago and Black Hawk Wars.
