Children with profound hearing loss can get a cochlear implant (CI) in order to be able to hear with “bionic hearing.” CIs do not replace the normal hearing system, so our research aims to understand how we can improve hearing in CI users. We study the brain to learn how CI users interpret the electric sound. This talk will span the age range from very young (toddlers) to adult CI users and will discuss both the progress and the challenges of bionic hearing.
