Description
Ireland, United Kingdom, Canada | 111 min | PG-13 | DCP | Dir. John Crowley Brooklyn tells the profoundly moving story of Eilis Lacey (Saoirse Ronan), a young Irish immigrant navigating her way through 1950s Brooklyn. Lured by the promise of America, Eilis departs Ireland and the comfort of her mother’s home for the shores of New York City. The initial shackles of homesickness quickly diminish as a fresh romance sweeps Eilis into the intoxicating charm of love. But soon, her new vivacity is disrupted by her past, and Eilis must choose between two countries and the lives that exist within. (Fox Searchlight, Official Website) "A cinematic snow-globe of nostalgia, a portrait of two worlds that aches with family lost and freedoms found. It is a beautiful film to experience." - Ty Burr (Boston Globe) The  Hyphenated-Americans Film Festival  will feature 11 films about Americans with intersecting identities informing their unique experiences of being American. The films will highlight that being American is being a hyphenated-American. This film festival is a response to the current political moment and celebrates the diversity vital to the American experience. This festival has films ranging from documentaries and dramas to a comedy special. This event is intended for UW-Madison students, faculty, staff and Union members and guests.
