This talk explores one chapter of Dr. Pyle’s current project on Indigenous gender diversity in the 19th century, focusing on the Ojibwe Two-Spirit figure named Ozaawindib. Using concepts in the Ojibwe language, the talk will show how Ozaawindib’s seemingly individual pursuits of marriage and glory in war actually reflect important roles that Two-Spirit people could hold in Ojibwe diplomacy and kinship.
